Iggy pop albums. McRae could play the media game, play the sponsor game, look good on a camera, put off a 'family man' persona, all while being approachable in spite of being a world champion. He had a personality where you would see him on a tv interview and think 'Yeah, if you'd run into him at a pub you'd never think he was a superstar.' Higgins is the same way.

Get a few beers into him after LSPR and holy shit get ready to party. And how many people do you know that could pull this off:. Him and Pastrana (who at the time was through his motoX and freestyle work) were battling it out for first. It was the first time Rallying had ever been a part of X-games, and the first time that millions of people had even ever heard of the sport.McRae did that roll, on the last corner, of the last stage, and gave Pastrana the win. There was speculation at the time that he intended to roll, so that the sponsors could make more money from the Pastrana ('local-hero') comeback story. He's probably the only person in the world who could have pulled off an intentional roll like that at the time. But if you look at McRae's past team-order ordeals, it's obvious that it wasn't actually intentional.Man that was a fun time to be on the forums though.

We'll never know if he was showing off flying so close to the trees in a narrow valley,We do know. They recovered a camcorder from the crash that showed him making tight maneuvers and flying close to trees and buildings, and generally showing off. He also did this while not being in possession of the correct flying licence, and having passengers including a 5 and 6 year old on board. This may be a unpopular opinion, but I have very little respect for him because of the actions that led to his death. As for why he is so popular? The video game. The first Colin McRae rally game was a massive success, and made him a household name outside of rallying. Not saying he wasn't a great driver - of course he was. But he was a bit of a Latvala character, win it or bin it. But he did win a championship.I'm not sure he had a great personality out of the car either.

I've no idea where people are pulling that from. He was a bit of a dour Scotsman, a bit sour and not always massively approachable. I've first hand experience of that. Richard Burns on the other hand was a very personable and approachable guy and yet noone remembers him.

I wouldn't say he was the Michael Schumacher, because he was certainly no iceman. People liked him because he displayed emotions, rather than being a cold, calculated and detached professional like so many other drivers. The fact that he just wanted to do his best and go flat out made him easy to cheer for - you always knew he would push.He also had a very aggressive, sideways, attacking style, which meant he generally either did well or crashed out - but it was good to watch. In later years the modern cars required a more controlled approach (like Loeb and Ogier) which meant he struggled a bit.He also drove some iconic cars - the, are some of the most fondly remembered rally machines. He was the plucky Brit - and at the end of the day that is who people remember, the guys who put it all on the line, not the ones who win without seeming to try, even if they are more skilled. In the Spanish speaking world, Carlos Sainz (Sr.) is probably more famous, but you are right McRae was a global superstar.

Basically because he and Tommi were two drivers who insisted on going flat out all the time, hence they either won or had massive crashes (I remember reading that 40% of rallies that Tommi didn't win he crashed out of). Tommi wasn't the most accessible for the English TV / media market, Colin had a great personality and tabloid friendly lifestyle and, ultimately, much like Senna, his death raised his profile.
